Tracking and sharing your drone’s achievements just got better.
Have you ever wondered how you can turn drone flying into a social event where you could challenge your friends, track your flight details, and then post all of your hard work to Facebook and Google, maybe even Twitter? Flytrex did and opened the door to a whole new world for quadcopters and multi-rotor flying.Flytrex Live 3gCompletely 3G compatible, the Flytrex Live 3G offers its users an extensive range of non-interrupted coverage. Once a live connection is established, you will be connected to an entire community of online drone fliers of all experience levels. Flight stats, live feeds, and pinpointing the location of your drone at all times is now at your fingertips.

The Black box

Flytrex FrontFlytrex Live 3G has capitalized on the “black box” technology used by the airline industry. Airplanes are equipped with a flight data recorder (a.k.a “the black box”) which records a set of specific performance parameters such as aircraft location, length of flight, distance, and more. If an accident occurs during the flight, the black box emits a signal back to the control center that allows it to be found wherever it has crashed.

That technology is now available for drone flyers. Typically, when flying your drone, the flight parameters are saved to an SD card. Then you download it to your computer. The Flytrex Live provides a live 3G internet connection for your aircraft so you can share your flight path, pinpoint its location if it gets lost, plus a whole lot more.

The Hardware

The Flytrex Live 3G is a lightweight, small, black box measuring roughly two inches around and a half inch thick. It weighs just over one ounce. It includes the installation cable (from box to drone), a pressure sensor, a USB port, a GPS data port, hardwired power leads, an LED status indicator, and a slot for inserting a SIM card.

It takes about 30 minutes to install the box onto your drone. The screws are small and most of the time will be spent unscrewing the outer shell of the quadcopter in order to connect the box. Don’t worry. Instructions are included. Once the cables are connected, mount the Live box to the drone’s chassis with the self-stick pads (included).

Depending on the model quadcopter you have, be aware that some soldering will need to be done. However, some models allow for solderless plug-and-play installation of the Live box.

All of the drones from DJI including the Phantom 1, Phantom 2, Phantom 2 Vision, Phantom 2 Vision Plus, DJI A2, WooKong-M, and the Naza-M 2 do not require any soldering for installation if you purchase a CAN-BUS adapter.

The box has an LED indicator light located on the bottom side. Mounting the box on the underside of the quadcopter will allow you to see the light at all times so you know that it’s activated.

Registering your Live Box

If you have a QR reader on your smart phone, scan the code on the back of the box. This will link your box to your Flytrex account. You can also manually enter the information online.

Data Plan Needed

Because the FLytrex Live 3G works on a cellular network, you will need to have a data plan with a network that offers 3G or higher. Any micro SIM card should work, but test it first.

On their website, Flytrex has recommended using cards from H2O Wireless. These prepaid SIM cards cost as low as $10, and provide approximately three months of flights. Although it requires a data plan, it generates very little data traffic during flight. So one card could last you quite a while.

Buy a micro SIM card, insert it into the Live box, activate your data plan, and you’re ready to fly. If you don’t want to purchase a separate card for your drone, you can use the existing SIM card from your smart phone and insert it to the Live box.

It Tracks Like a Champ

Flytrex Quadcopter trackingDrone flyers know the despair of losing their aircraft. Large investments can be scattered to the wind when your drone unexpectedly disappears. A tracking device of some sort for drones that have longer flight ranges is necessary in case it flies out of direct line of sight.

A standard global positioning system (GPS) is great, but doesn’t always work in every situation. Signals can be lost, it can be damaged, and so on. And, they don’t store flight missions. And they don’t let you post the flights to your preferred social networking site.

Live uses “Last Seen” as an online tool that pinpoints the exact location of where the drone was last seen. Whether it’s stuck in a tree or it crashed and burned, you can always find it. Log in to your Flytrex account, and you can access the quadcopters coordinates as well its altitude.

The Last Seen button can also be accessed from your smart phone. Pull up the app, push the “Last Seen” button, and its coordinates are displayed plus the distance from where you are to where it is.

Personal Pilot Profile and Flight Channel

Flytrex TrackingLike most software, you need to create a profile. It’s quick and easy and connects you to your drone via the Flytrex Live. The details of every flight are stored in your Pilot Profile until you delete it.

With the aircraft manager tracking tool, you can track and record your flights. You can see the statistics of each flight and see flight times, distances, and how you have improved over a period of time.

With your own personal Live Flight Channel, your flight can be shared in real time. The flight statistics, telemetry, and path using Google Maps can be posted to your channel for your friends and other pilots to view.

While you (and others) can view your flight in real-time, within a few short minutes after the flight has completed, your Pilot Profile page is automatically updated with map details, telemetry data, and other important stats from your flight.

Socialize Your Drone

With real-time capability, you can share your mission with others as you fly. Once you set up your Flytrex account, it can be synced to your other social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, and even Google Plus.

Then, if you feel like sharing your flight specs with a few friends, you can upload it all to other social platforms.

Challenge Other Pilots

Flying solo with a quadcopter can be loads of fun, but flying with a partner – or against him/her – can be even better. With the Flytex Live 3G, you can challenge other pilots in competitions of speed, distance, acrobatics, and other categories.

Flytrex Challenges

When you obtain various achievements, you can earn badges. Badges are won for speed, ascent, world travel, and more. Since your flight can be broadcasted live, everyone can watch as you earn badge after badge.

Compatibility

What’s the point of having this technology if it can’t fit your drone? Flytrex Live 3G is compatible with multiple drones, and the list is growing.

It can support the following:
  • DJI Naza-M 2, Naza-M 1, Lite
  • Phantom 1, 2, 2 Vision, 2 Vision Plus, FC40
  • WooKong-M
  • Glad 350 QX
  • APM Pixhawk
  • DJI A2
  • Iris+
  • 3DR Pixhawk
  • 3DR APM 2.6
  • Blade 350 QX, QX2, QX3
  • Yuneec Q500

To make it even more in sync with societal expectations, there is even a mobile app. It’s compatible with both Android and iOS smartphones. From your phone, you can view the flight path of your drone in real-time as well as use the Last Seen feature.

Comparisons

Let’s do a quick review of the good and maybe not-so-good points about the Live box.
